I made these last evening for Christmas dinner. They were delicious! I have been using this recipe for well over 40 years and it works well in a slow cooker.I enjoyed this recipe very much. My Polish family made similar rolls. The difference was in the sauce.my family has passed down this recipe for generation after generation .
In This Recipe You Will Need These Ingredients :
- 2 heads of cabbage
- 2 lbs ground beef
- 3 cups cooked rice
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp garlic
- 1 tbsp parsley
- 2 slices diced onion
- 1 -15 oz. can tomato sauce
- 1-28 oz. can crushed tomatoes
- 1/4 cup tomato sauce (in meat)
- Salt & Pepper to taste
Preparation :
Step 1 : Set a head of cabbage in a pot of boiling water, Then peel off the cabbage leaves .Cut off the bumpy part on the edge of the cabbage leaf with a knife.
Step 2 : Now Combine all mentioned ingredients together except the 15 oz can of tomato sauce and crushed tomatoes, after that put a small amount (size of a sausage) on a cabbage leaf and roll up like a fajita then place seam side down in a casserole dish.
Step 3 : Pour crushed tomatoes over Halupkys.
Step 4 : Cover the casserole and bake it approximately 75 minutes at 370º.
Step 5 :Now we need to decrease the temperature a little bit so Turn oven down to 325º then Let it bake for approximately 90 minutes more until cabbage is mushy.
Baste every hour.
Tips And Tricks :
- I always Put tomato sauce and one cabbage leaf or two on the lowest part of the casserole dish so the Halupky won’t burn.
- Serve with tomato sauce.
- Instead of tomato soup you can you a can of crushed tomatoes and a can of tomato sauce.
